Listen in when we reconnect with Jeff Rotmeyer, Founder and CEO of ImpactHK, a Hong Kong-based registered NGO that is transforming the lives of the homeless.
Jeff started ImpactHK because he saw a great need for fresh ideas on how the homeless in Hong Kong are treated.
The first time we met Jeff back in Summer 2017 and it is just incredible what his community of volunteers (or army as he lovingly calls them) has achieved on the streets since we last met.
From the humble beginnings of Jeff showing one simple act of kindness a month to the homeless, his organisation evolved into a powerful humanitarian movement making a positive impact on the plight of the homeless.
Their volunteers meet with the homeless every day to hand out food, toiletries and other necessities. ImpactHK volunteers offer kindness, friendship and connection, building a trusting relationship to make positive change.
We recorded at an incredibly meaningful place, The Guestroom in Tai Kok Tsui – a day centre for the homeless serving 400+ homeless people in the surrounding area that ImpactHK community has created to offer a space to make meaningful connections for those most in need, for friendships, love, learning and job opportunities. It’s a place where they can share meals, watch TV or wash their clothes. Most of all it’s a place where they have found a new family that makes them forget, even if just for a short while, the hardships they face on the street.
Hear for yourself in this interview what this place means to Jeff, why opening this centre was a milestone and tipping point for making bigger change happen and how ImpactHK is transforming people’s lives through their impactful, holistic approach of support.
Last time we met Jeff, ImpactHK was already serving people on the streets through their meaningful kindness walks – and they still do with around 60 walks a month (up from 20/month when we met last time! ) But now with the Guestroom they can make bigger change happen by offering the homeless mentorship, counselling, sports programme and additional services to get them off the streets and that way give them a real chance for transforming their life. With their job creation programme they have already supported numerous homeless to turn their life around.
You will also hear exciting updates when it comes to Love 21 Foundation, the second charity Jeff has founded to serve the Down Syndrome and Autistic community, empowering them through sports and nutrition programmes in Hong Kong.
