The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. The Global Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

In Season 5, we sit down with stakeholders working across numerous sectors and industries, to find a common language to address, measure and demonstrate the impact that they are making in tackling the 17 Global Goals.

From Berlin to Sydney, from Seoul to Hong Kong, our #impact hosts will bring you stories from all over the globe as you find inspiration on how to make an #impact in your community too.

We focus on what connects us instead on what separates us. We envision a world in which we support each other, just because we can – and because it feels good.

In this episode, Alice our #impact Podcast Ambassador from Berlin, talks to Nora, one of the Co-Founders of mimycri. They are more than a fashion brand: mimycri demonstrates that when we start to see things in a different way, a whole new world of possibilities can open up. They co-create beautiful handcrafted products, each with its own unique story of hope and courage. A story that you preserve and shape by wearing. The co founders and friends Vera and Nora are dedicated to making a difference raising awareness and tackling the topic of migration in an innovative way: upcycling broken refugee rubber boats collected from the coast of Greece.

‘If everything would be alright, we wouldn’t need to exist’

Our goal is to communicate in an innovative and unique approach the interconnectedness of the Sustainable Development Goals while empowering newcomers through work integration in Germany.

Our project has an impact on three levels:

1) The refugees that we involve in our design and production process who develop job relevant skills and gain an income.

2) The people that buy our products who become ambassadors for our story.

3) The people who hear about our story. We have reached over 85 million people through media up until today!

mimycri combines aesthetic design with exceptional quality while never losing sight of a social, transparent and eco-friendly production process. They focus on appreciation of resources and employ people who would otherwise have difficulties in finding a job. They integrate meaningful products into society and thereby create an innovative way to engage with relevant topics of our time.

In this episode, you will learn about…

  • how volunteering in Greece became their starting point to create this organization
  • how this NGO contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
  • how a story can be told without words but by a product
  • the situation of refugees in Germany and Greece
